Marketing jobseekers use ‘old boy’s networks’ to secure employment
A recent survey has highlighted that 75% of jobseekers use personal contacts in their search for further employment.
Social media remains an enigma. Job boards are prevalent. Good news for recruiters. Print is dead.
Specialist careers website, Top-consultant.com, sampled 138 companies and 1,088 jobseekers in a recent survey, which aimed to unlock the multi-channels now available to individuals looking for a new job. The survey looked at jobseeker and recruiter ‘habitual activity’.
Here are the highlights:

Recruiter headline results
A decent – rather than spectacular – improvement in hiring conditions:
- 31.2% expect to make considerably more hires than last year
- 45.7 slightly more hires than last year
- 13% same number of hires
- Only 10% making less
The type of consultants being hired will change:
- Public sector hiring will plummet
- Financial services will be back at pre-2008 levels
- Strategy Consulting will pick up significantly
- IT shortages addressed
Retention to deteriorate increasing hiring needs
- 38% expect staff turnover to increase in 2010
Two additional factors impact on 2010 recruiting – resourcing constraints and an exodus of candidates

- Over 10% of consultants expect to leave the industry
Jobseekers, what sources are you using to find your next position? Are these results reflective of your own searches?
