Recruitment agencies do have their place in a job search, however, candidates need to use every resource available to them in this tough market.
Looking for a job is like a full time job in itself. You need to optimise your search -
- Find online recruitment advertising websites that specialise in your sector and register for job alerts – Monster, Total Jobs etc are ok for generic roles but PR week, Only Marketing Jobs, LinkedIn etc tend to have more roles in a certain sector
- Think about what kind of company you’d like to work for; Google companies in your area, research what they do and approach them directly. Call the HR dept, ask if you can send your details and put together an excellent covering letter and CV.
- If you do secure an interview – BE PREPARED! Employers are seeing more people for each job than this time last year so you have to put yourself ahead of the pack. Most interviewees do the bare minimum in preparation for an interview i.e. read the website and the job spec.
You need to push your research to the next level. Who are their competitors? Look at their clients’ websites. Research all aspects of the role thoroughly, especially those you’re not totally proficient in or haven’t touched upon in your current role.
