It is all about generousity: if you help someone (especially if it is repeated) you expect a simple thanks as a minimum and a return of the favours

You also expect the beneficiary of the referral or recommendation to provide a service or product that will not let your contact or you by extension down

Those that give most also have most to gain - it is about being helpful to your friends and associates and yourself

Steve and Mitch thanks once again for your comments and for taking such an interest - I hope this marks you out as genuinely acknowledging your market and understanding what makes it tick.

It's certainly interesting to note the dichotomy between altruistic behaviour in such a commercially-focussed world right now, where you'd think money would be a key driver when asking someone to go 'out of their way' to help.

I agree with Mitch that cash undermines the objective of a referral.

Getting referrals is a natural part of business life and always has been. I can't see how paying for them simply makes any sense as it just lessens the integrity of the referral, from all sides.

The only time I ever agree to pay someone for a referral is if they actually ask to be paid.

Having said that I am a big believer in rewarding successful referrals - and by successful I mean the candidate stays in the job for more than 6 months.

That is a slightly different dynamic depending on how the referrals are gathered and if it's promoted or sold on the financial element.

Bottom line is that any referral system (formal or informal) is totally reliant on the credibility of the employer or agent.

Fascinating poll - and totally encouraged by this.
I sat in a referral programmes track at #trulondon frustrated by the emphasis on the ever failing financial reward programmes and not recognising human nature reaction to working for a great company with a great reputation.
(I wrote about it after: http://recruitmentmisfit.com/staff-referral-rewards-good-tactics-or-desper )

If you're a good recruiter, with the right tools and methods - or a great company, who have created a great employer presence and brand, with fantastic products and culture - then people will WANT to refer naturally. I build my business on referral and recommendation - and have never had to give a `referral reward` to anyone for the fine work they do in sending candidates our way out of genuine good friendship or helpfulness.

Glad this has been emphasised by the pool - although still a little disgruntled that 1 in 3 do still want a reward.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Certainly these results are not indicative of my views - I believe sales is an essential element in recruitment. Take away the ability to open new doors on the spot and identify opportunities when you didn't expect them is equally as important as building long-term relationships.

However, the question allows only one answer which I why I side with passion because the other traits can all be taught.

I'm with Mitch.
Recruitment is about listening to client and candidate needs and then finding a solution which matches them both. I'd say that's selling.
