Not sure how creative you could be in your job search?  Check out this video.

Application-spammers hang your head in shame.  This is how to stand out from a crowd.

Seeking a social media role within a creative agency, Laura Tosney knew she had to do something different if she was to grab the attention of the hirer.  Having chosen digital agency, 33, as her destination of choice, Laura set about an application that has seen her work transcend many social media channels as a beacon for alternative jobseeker innovation.

I caught up with Laura and asked her why she did what she did.

Laura TosneyI knew that for a company like 33, which is all about creativity and being social, the application would have to use the right media…which, in my eyes, ruled out a paper or simply an emailed CV. The video was just a risky bit of inspiration. I’d been toying around with making one just for fun but I figured, why not do it for something actually important! It was also a fun way of putting a bit of personality into the application – I don’t know about anyone else but it’s too easy to come across as pompous and self-important on a CV. The video gave me a great way of by-passing that.

Laura also has an opinion on the importance of making a difference in today’s job application environment.

“As for today’s job climate,” she says, “I think it really is important to stand out in any positive way you can. Involvement in the area you want to get into career-wise is obviously a must, and I think using social media by, say, starting a blog and documenting what you personally think and find out about the world/your potential career area is a good way to show an employer that you really care – it’s more tangible than the usual CV rhetoric.”

And I for one couldn’t agree more.

Eugh, I do find that horribly self-indulgent. However it does fit in with the style of marketing that so many websites/brands use (aren’t we cute!) and I can’t deny the talent.
