Almost 90% of marketers feel secure in their current job
With the number of available marketing jobs expected to rise significantly throughout 2010, one recruiter brings good news
In its annual poll of the marketing profession, EMR, the global marketing recruitment specialist, found that, despite a harsh economic landscape, employee confidence remains high.
EMR’s 2010 UK Marketing & Communications Salary Survey and Marketing Report surveyed over 2,000 respondents during October and November 2009. Of those permanently employed, 87% said they felt ‘secure’ (70%) or ‘very secure’ (17%).
Simon Bassett, managing director of EMR, said: ‘There’s no doubt that economic and market conditions have affected all professions over the last 12 months and the marketing and communications community is no exception. However, we’re picking up some very strong signals from the market that confidence and optimism are returning in spades. Perhaps most interestingly, the figures for job security and confidence are up significantly on our report from 2007.’
Of those who have changed employer, the majority of respondents cited ‘career development’ as the primary motivation; by comparison, back in 2007, it was ‘higher salary’ that induced 70% of respondents to make the change. ‘Perhaps marketers have sacrificed monetary rewards for greater job satisfaction or perhaps it is a reflection of expectations given the state of the economic climate over the past eighteen months,’ added Bassett.
Bonus payment fluctuation
Of those permanently employed respondents who are entitled to a bonus payment, 67% received one in 2009 – a significant increase of 18% from 2007 and perhaps surprising considering the economic climate and widely publicised reports to the contrary. Whilst 30% saw the amount of their bonus decrease, a similar proportion received a higher figure than in the previous year.
Perhaps it is surprising – or perhaps not, depending on one’s viewpoint – that the financial services industry still has the highest propensity to pay bonuses, followed by FMCG / consumer goods, business services / B2B / utilities and IT / telecoms. Similarly, the financial services sector continues to pay significantly high salary packages across most job functions.
An interesting year ahead
Bassett believes that 2010 will be an interesting year, both for established employees and for jobseekers. He said: “We’ll probably see further increases in basic salary as people may be less reliant on bonuses and become more demanding. There will also be greater fluidity in the job market as many who were unsettled last year were deterred from moving due to the recession.”

The reason marketeers are more secure in their current jobs is because having gone through all they have in order to retain their jobs, they know they are valued and needed by their employers.
