Join the revolution There’s a revolution occurring on Facebook.  Are you part of the collective imagination?

We all know that building communities is important in today’s society.  Actually, it’s always been important but whether because of or in spite of the recent economic turbulence, we appear to be a world more readily galvanised for the common cause.

The development of online social networking has made community-building significantly easier than it was in the last recession and being one of the pioneers of the counterculture, Facebook continues to deride conjecture to successfully entwine mainstream urban pop with commercial capitalism.

Individual or business: why join the a facebook fanpage? Lets use the Only Marketing Jobs fan page as an example:

1.  Receive relevant industry news

Only Marketing Jobs produces lots of interesting content, which is a combination of fresh ideas and opinions and industry-sourced media.  You can get your daily news fix via the Fan Page, helping to keep your inbox free.  It’s a bit like sitting in your lounge with a cup of tea and a biscuit and watching Moira Stewart.

Relevant to: anyone within marketing and the staffing industry.

iPod Shuffle

2.  Competitions

They’re a little bit of fun and hugely interactive.  In December the competition was to send in pictures of your Christmas tree.  The winner was chosen based on which one looked best and, as a result, which received most ‘likes’.  The prize was an iPod Shuffle.  That was it.  Simple.  On 4th January the winner was announced.

Stephen O’Donnell, founder of UK recruitment mapping company, AlljobsUK.com, said upon accepting his prize: “Winning the Shuffle was a complete surprise. Looking at the many other entrants I knew my tree had a chance but I suspected it lacked the necessary height to be a real contender. I guess the old adage about size is true. And the same could be said for Only Marketing Jobs: the new kid on the block in the digital recruitment advertising space.  Their innovative community engagement continues to surpass industry expectations of a traditional job board, with social networking a significant driver in the overall strategy.”

3.  Contribute to your community

Like, share and comment on the stuff you read and watch.  You’re already doing it with your friends so why not show how much you know to your business network?  Not only do people start thinking ‘wow, they’re smart’ but it makes you feel important, too.  And sharing ideas in a huddle builds fantastic team spirit.  Go on, scribble on our wall.

This is social engagement in a professional sense.  Smart, eh!

4.  Job updates

If you’re looking for marketing jobs you can find direct employer vacancies updated in real-time.  Want to know which fantastic brands are looking for you?  Check it out.

Perhaps you’ve had experience of the companies before?  Leave a comment for others.

5.  Get in the heads of business folk

There is a distinct separation between LinkedIn and Facebook – and rightly so.  The former is categorically for professional networking, whilst the latter is about the other side of you – the ‘weekend you’.  The ‘you’ out of a suit.  It’s quite clever really.  LinkedIn can’t do that.

The Only Marketing Jobs LinkedIn group is good for ‘Monday-Friday you’.

6.  Events updates

If you want to know where you should be going for your next knowledge fix or networking evening, you can find it at the Fan Page.  And it’s not just the Only Marketing Jobs 2010 Road Show, either.  Fans are encouraged to promote their own events.  And they do.  Regularly.  So if ever you needed an excuse to get out of the office or fancied talking shop over a bottle of wine, you can update your diary here.

Twitter

7.  Twitter updates

Only Marketing Jobs is pretty prolific when comes to Twitter and you can follow all the useful 140 characters tweeted out via the Fan Page.  Why not add Only Marketing to your TweetDeck?

We also use Twitter to update our status so look no further for regular commentary.

Old fashioned camera

8.  Pictures & videos

Of course one of the best things about Facebook is the ability to share stuff.  With the development of video for interactive messaging, expect more motion pictures at the Only Marketing Jobs Fan Page.  As for pictures, grab a digital camera and upload.  The more pictures of your cat perched on the TV the better.  Really.  Need a teaser?  Well, when we go out for a curry you can see what we’re eating.  You see, interesting.

9.  Meet the team

Being the automated recruitment advertising platform it is, nobody would really mind if we hid behind our job board technology.  But we do mind.  We’ve no intention of skulking in the cupboard and so we come out and get social with you.  Hence Facebook.  So, who are we?  Join the revolution and find out.

We’re social, are you?

10.  Amaze the world…

…well, the community.  Social networking provides the perfect platform on which to build our personal brands.  If you’re a regular Facebook user you’ll be dropping in things about what you’re up to, where you’ve been, what you think of this and that, who should win such and such.  If readers looked into all this ground-breaking insight they’d see a profile about you.  So why not show you’re as smart as a man with two heads by opining about things you know.  People will quickly realise they should be taking you out for a coffee.  Or a beer.

There’s a revolution occurring over at Facebook.  Shouldn’t you be part of it?
